Strongest Smelling Wax Melts

"Strongest" is the most common thing people search for, and the most commonly misunderstood. Buying a bigger melt is usually not the answer. Scent throw comes from three things, and melt size is the least important of them.

1. Fragrance load

This is the percentage of fragrance oil held in the wax, and it is the single biggest factor. A 6% melt in a large room will disappoint you no matter how big it is. Around 8–10% is where a melt reliably fills a standard living room. Most retailers do not publish this figure — if a listing says nothing about fragrance load, assume it is at the low end.

2. The shape of your burner well, not the size of your melt

Scent evaporates from the surface of the molten wax. A wide, shallow well exposes far more surface area than a deep, narrow one, so it throws considerably more fragrance from exactly the same melt. If your melts feel weak, changing the burner is often more effective than changing the melt. Look at our ceramic oil burners with broad open wells.

3. Run time and top-ups

A tealight lasts around four hours, then the wax cools and stops releasing. For a long evening, plan on a second tealight rather than accepting the fade. For a large or open-plan space, two burners in different spots will always beat one burner working harder — scent does not travel across a room as well as people expect.

What actually does not help

Overfilling the well. Too much wax insulates itself; the top layer never gets hot enough. Fill to about two-thirds.
Judging it in the first ten minutes. Give a melt twenty minutes to reach full throw before deciding it is weak.
Standing in the room the whole time. Nose blindness sets in within about fifteen minutes. Step out and come back.
