Wax Melt Burner Buying Guide

A burner is a well with a heat source underneath. That sounds simple enough that people buy on looks alone — and then wonder why their melts underperform. Three decisions actually matter.

Decision 1: well shape — the one people miss

Scent evaporates from the surface of the molten wax. A wide, shallow well exposes far more surface area than a deep, narrow one, so it throws considerably more fragrance from exactly the same melt. A deep, narrow well releases slowly and gently, which is right for a small room or a bedroom.

Everything else being equal, well shape will make more difference to your experience than which melt you buy. Look at it before you look at the design.

Decision 2: material

• Ceramic — heats evenly, cleans easily, widest choice of designs. The safe all-rounder. Browse ceramic.
• Soapstone and sandstone — slower to heat, but hold temperature far longer. Gives a gentler, more even release. Good for bedrooms and for taming strong fragrances. Browse stone and wood.
• Mango wood — a carved wooden body with a removable dish. Warmth of wood, practicality of a lift-out well.

Decision 3: does it need to look good unlit?

A burner spends most of its life switched off, sitting on a shelf. Plain glazed shapes disappear into a minimal interior. A burner that clashes with the room ends up in a cupboard.

Practical points

• Removable dishes are far easier to clean than fixed wells.
• Use one unscented tealight only. Two in a burner made for one overheats the wax and can crack ceramic.
• Check the gap between the tealight and the well. Too tight and the wax overheats and the scent burns off fast.
• Always place a burner on a heat-resistant surface, away from curtains and anything flammable, and never leave a lit tealight unattended.

If you are buying your first burner: a wide-welled ceramic burner. It handles melts, simmering granules and fragrance oils, cleans in seconds, and gives you the strongest scent throw for the least money.
