Wax Melts Buying Guide
Most people who say wax melts "don't work" bought the wrong melt for their room, or the right melt for the wrong burner. This guide covers the five things that actually determine whether a melt fills your space, in the order they matter.
1. Wax type: soy, paraffin or blend
Soy is a renewable vegetable wax. It melts at a lower temperature, releases fragrance more gradually, and cleans out of a burner well with a cotton pad. Paraffin melts hotter and throws scent harder and faster, but fades sooner and can carry a sharper top note. Soy blends sit between the two and are what most UK makers use. If you are sensitive to strong synthetic scents, start with soy.
2. Fragrance load is the number that matters
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil in the wax. Below about 6% you will struggle to notice a melt in anything larger than a bathroom. Between 8% and 10% is where a melt comfortably fills a normal living room. Very few retailers publish this figure, which is why two melts at the same price can perform completely differently. Where we know it, we state it on the product page.
3. Match the scent family to the room
- Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways — fresh, citrus, clean linen. These cut through cooking smells and damp.
- Living rooms and bedrooms — gourmand and woody. Vanilla, amber, sandalwood, tonka. Warm scents you can sit in for hours.
- Spaces you pass through — floral. Lovely in a hallway, tiring in a room where you spend an evening.
- October to December — festive and spiced. Cinnamon, clove, orange, fir.
4. The burner matters as much as the melt
A wide, shallow well gives a larger surface area of molten wax and therefore a stronger scent throw. A deep, narrow well gives a slower, gentler release. Stone burners hold heat longer and temper strong fragrances; ceramic heats evenly and is the safest all-rounder. If you want fragrance to last a long evening, plan on a second tealight rather than accepting the fade.
5. How much you actually need
One standard melt gives roughly 8 to 12 hours of usable fragrance, which for most people is three to five evenings. A pack of six therefore covers around a month of regular evening use in one room. If you are fragrancing two rooms, buy two burners rather than one large melt — scent does not travel between rooms as well as people expect.
A quick starting point
If you have never used melts before: one ceramic burner with a wide well, and one mixed gift set so you can find out which fragrance family you actually like before committing to a full pack.
