Wax Melt Burner Safety

Wax melts are a low-risk product used properly. Nearly every incident comes down to placement or an unattended flame.

Placement

• On a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface: not a tablecloth, not a wooden shelf without a mat, not a windowsill with a curtain near it.
• At least 30cm of clear space above and around it. A shelf directly overhead traps heat.
• Away from draughts, which make a flame flicker unpredictably and can pull it sideways.
• Out of reach of children and pets. A high, deep surface, not a coffee table.
• Never on top of a TV, speaker, or anything electrical.

Tealight rules

• Never leave a lit tealight unattended, and never overnight. This is the single most important rule on this page.
• Use one tealight only. Two in a burner made for one overheats the wax and can crack ceramic.
• Use unscented tealights, a scented one fights the melt.
• Let the burner cool fully before moving it. Ceramic holds heat far longer than it looks like it does.
• Extinguish with a snuffer or by blowing gently from the side, so you do not spatter hot wax.
• Keep matches and lighters away from the burner once it is lit.

Looking after the burner itself

• Do not put a hot burner into cold water. Thermal shock cracks ceramic, sometimes days later.
• Check for hairline cracks before each use. A cracked well can leak molten wax onto the flame.
• Stone and wooden burners get very hot and stay hot for longer than ceramic. Give them more cooling time.
• Never move a burner while the wax is liquid.

Spills and burns

Molten wax is hot enough to scald. If it goes on skin, run the area under cool water for at least ten minutes and then peel the set wax off gently, do not pick at it while hot. Seek medical advice for anything larger than a small patch, or any blistering.

On fabric or carpet, let the wax set hard, scrape off the bulk, then place brown paper over the residue and press with a warm iron so the paper absorbs it.

Around pets and children

Place the burner well out of reach on a high, deep surface, keep the room ventilated, and never leave it lit unattended. See are wax melts safe for pets for scent-specific guidance, particularly if you have a cat or keep birds.

Ventilation

Never run fragrance in a sealed room for hours. Give the space airflow and give it breaks. This matters most for anyone in the household with asthma or a respiratory condition.
