How to Layer Wax Melt Scents

One of the genuinely nice things about melts, and something candles cannot do: you can put two together in the same well and make something of your own.

The rule of thumb

Pair a base with a top note. Bases are heavy and slow: vanilla, amber, sandalwood, tonka, musk, patchouli. Top notes are light and quick: citrus, mint, apple, fresh linen, herbs. Two bases together turn muddy and heavy. Two top notes together smell thin and disappear within the hour.

Proportions

Start with two-thirds base and one-third top note. Base scents are almost always stronger, and an equal split usually means you only smell the base. You can always add more of the lighter one; you cannot take it out.

Seven combinations that work

• Vanilla and orange: warm, sweet, very easy to like. Good in winter.
• Sandalwood and bergamot: grown-up and slightly cologne-like. Excellent in a study.
• Amber and fresh linen: warmth without heaviness. Works year-round.
• Cinnamon and apple: the autumn classic, and it earns it.
• Lavender and lemon: calming but not soporific. Good in a bathroom.
• Tonka and coffee: rich and unusual. A little goes a long way.
• Cedarwood and eucalyptus: clean and green. Nice after cleaning the house.

What to avoid

Two strong florals together (rose and jasmine will fight). Gourmand plus heavy floral: vanilla and rose reads as cheap air freshener. Anything medicinal, like tea tree or camphor, blended with a sweet base. And more than two melts at once, which almost never resolves into anything coherent.

Practical notes

• Use half of each melt so you can adjust rather than committing both.
• Add the base first, let it liquefy, then add the top note. It integrates more evenly.
• Simmering granules are the easiest format for blending, because you can spoon precise ratios.
• Write down anything you like. You will not remember the proportions next month.
• Wipe the well between experiments, residue from a previous blend will skew the next one.
