How to Remove Wax From a Burner

Getting spent wax out is the one bit of upkeep melts require. Four methods, depending on the burner and how much of a hurry you are in.

Method 1: cool and pop (best for ceramic)

Let the wax set hard and cool completely, an hour is plenty. Press one edge of the disc firmly with your thumb. Wax contracts as it cools and pulls away from the glaze, so the disc releases in one piece. Lift it out, wipe with a dry towel, done.

Method 2: the freezer (for stubborn discs)

Put the burner, or the removable dish, in the freezer for fifteen minutes. The extra contraction usually makes the disc drop out on its own. Do not use this on a warm burner, let it come to room temperature first, or you risk cracking it.

Method 3: warm and slide (fastest)

Light the tealight or switch the warmer on for two to three minutes, just long enough to soften the very bottom layer. Turn it off, then slide a spoon under the still-solid disc and lift it out whole. Wipe the residue while the well is warm; it comes off far more easily than when cold.

Method 4: cotton pad (for the last film)

With the well still warm, press a cotton pad or piece of kitchen roll into it. It absorbs the remaining liquid wax. On glazed ceramic, finish with a pad dampened with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar if any film remains.

Stone and wooden burners are different

Soapstone and sandstone are porous. Use dry methods only, no water, no alcohol, no vinegar, because the liquid soaks in, can leave a mark, and traps old fragrance. Mango wood burners usually have a removable metal or ceramic dish; take it out and clean that rather than the wooden body.

Two things that damage a burner

Cold water on a hot burner. Thermal shock cracks ceramic, sometimes days later.
Metal scrapers and knives on glaze. The scratches trap wax permanently and make every future clean worse.
