The soy-versus-paraffin argument gets more heated online than the difference warrants. Both work. They behave differently, and one of them will suit you better.
Scent throw: paraffin, slightly
Paraffin holds fragrance oil well and releases it fast, so a paraffin melt hits harder in the first hour. Soy releases more gradually. If you want an immediate, room-filling burst before guests arrive, paraffin does it better.
Duration: soy
Soy melts at a lower temperature and gives its fragrance up more slowly, so the same fragrance load lasts longer. Over a full melt, soy usually delivers more total fragrance hours even though each hour is gentler.
Cleaning: soy, clearly
Soy releases from a glazed well cleanly and wipes out with a dry cotton pad. Paraffin is more inclined to leave a film that needs alcohol or vinegar to shift. If you change scents often, this matters more than you would think. See cleaning a burner.
Air quality: soy, marginally
Neither produces meaningful soot in a burner, because nothing combusts, the wax is warmed, not burned. That is a real advantage of melts over candles generally. Soy burns cooler, which some people find gives a cleaner-smelling result with less of a harsh top note.
Environment: soy
Soy is a renewable vegetable wax and biodegradable. Paraffin is a petroleum by-product. Soy is not perfect, soy farming has land-use implications of its own, but on this measure it is the better of the two.
Cost: paraffin
Paraffin is cheaper per kilo, which is why budget multi-packs are usually paraffin. Factor in the longer fragrance life of soy and the gap narrows considerably.
Why blends exist
Most UK makers use a soy-paraffin blend, and it is not a cop-out. A blend gives you most of paraffin's immediate throw with most of soy's duration and clean release. If a melt is described as "soy blend", that is a deliberate formulation choice rather than a compromise.
Which to buy
Choose soy if you burn melts most days, change scents often, care about renewables, or find strong synthetic fragrance harsh. Choose paraffin or a blend if you want maximum immediate impact in a large room, or you are buying on price. For most homes, a soy blend at 8 to 10% fragrance load is the right answer.
